Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Melbourne rates highly in education, entertainment, health care, research and development, tourism and sport,[14] making it the world's most liveable city—for the fifth year in a row in 2015, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. It is a leading financial centre in the Asia-Pacific region, and ranks among the top 30 cities in the world in the Global Financial Centres Index. Referred to as Australia's "cultural capital”, it is the birthplace of Australian impressionism, Australian rules football, the Australian film and television industries, and Australian contemporary dance such as the Melbourne Shuffle.

Melbourne has an integrated public transport system based around extensive train, tram, bus and taxi systems. Melbourne has the largest tram network in the world. Melbourne's trams are recognised as iconic cultural assets and a tourist attraction.

Melbourne is the home of seven public universities: The University of Melbourne, Monash University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University), Deakin University, La Trobe University,Swinburne University of Technology and Victoria University. Apart from this Melbourne has vocational institutes and English language schools.
