UK cuts post‑study work rights, tightens student route under new immigration overhaul
The UK government has unveiled its "Restoring Control Over the Immigration System" white paper (May 12, 2025), signalling a major shift in migration policy. Key changes for international students include reducing the Graduate Route post-study work visa from 2 years to 18 months. English language requirements will be strengthened—applicants and dependants must demonstrate higher proficiency. Student dependants face new restrictions, especially for postgrad students
The White Paper also proposes a levy (approx. 6%) on universities’ international fee income, tougher sponsor compliance rules, and tightening of lower-skilled work and social care visas Additionally, the route to UK permanent settlement is extended—from five to ten years for many migrants.
These reforms aim to reduce net migration by roughly 100,000 annually, while maintaining a selective route for high-skilled talent
